[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] ULSAN, April 12, 2026 — HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has issued a formal apology following a fatal fire aboard a naval submarine under maintenance at its Ulsan shipyard, pledging to prevent a recurrence.
In a joint statement released on April 12 under the names of Vice Chairman Lee Sang-kyun and President Geum Seok-ho, the company expressed “deep condolences” for the deceased and extended sympathy to the bereaved family.
“We are deeply saddened that such a tragic incident occurred despite implementing high-intensity safety policies aimed at preventing serious industrial accidents,” the company said, adding that it feels “profound responsibility” toward colleagues affected by the incident.
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries stated it will mobilize all available resources to manage the aftermath and provide support, while fully cooperating with authorities to determine the cause of the accident. “We will thoroughly investigate the cause and establish all necessary measures to ensure such a tragedy never happens again,” the statement said.
The company also issued a direct apology, stating, “We sincerely apologize for failing to protect a precious life and will do our utmost to create a safer workplace.”
The incident occurred on April 9 aboard the ROKS Hong Beom-do, a 214-class (1,800-ton) submarine undergoing maintenance at the Ulsan shipyard. The fire reportedly broke out during cleaning operations.
A subcontractor worker in her 60s, who had been trapped during the fire, was found dead approximately 33 hours later on April 11.
