[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] SEOUL, South Korea – October 21, 2025 – South Korea’s financial sector has reported eight hacking incidents in 2025, including a massive data breach at Lotte Card that compromised the personal information of 2.97 million customers, according to data from the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) obtained by Rep. Kang Min-kook of the National Assembly’s Political Affairs Committee.
Other affected institutions include iM Bank, KB Life Insurance, Nomura Financial Investment Korea, Standard Chartered Bank Korea, Hana Card, Seoul Guarantee Insurance, and Yaksasonhae Insurance.
Between 2020 and September 2025, a total of 31 hacking incidents were recorded across the financial industry. Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks accounted for the largest share (42%), followed by malware and security vulnerability exploits.
Experts warn that the true scale of data breaches may be higher, as incidents involving smaller firms and subsidiaries often go unreported. Lawmakers are urging stronger cybersecurity oversight and real-time monitoring across all financial institutions.
