[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] On the 3rd (local time), KAI announced that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with SEMAN, a Peruvian state-owned aerospace maintenance company, for joint production of parts for the FA-50 fighter jet.

SEMAN, established under Peru's Ministry of Defense to promote the country's aerospace industry, handles tasks such as assembly and performance enhancement. In 2012, SEMAN locally assembled 16 out of 20 KT-1P trainer aircraft exported to Peru under a contract with KAI.

This MOU follows discussions initiated during Peru's defense exhibition 'SITDEF 2023' last May, involving the Peruvian government, Air Force, and SEMAN to enhance industrial cooperation. Over the past year, KAI conducted on-site assessments in Peru, and through this MOU, they plan to establish a joint task force, initiating practical work on collaborative production of key components such as machinery and sheet metal.

With many aging fighter jets in the Latin American market, spanning over 30 years, there is significant potential among potential customers, making it a focus area for KAI's marketing efforts. The successful operation of KT-1P by the Peruvian Air Force, coupled with this MOU for joint parts production, positions the FA-50 favorably for selection in Peru's future generation fighter aircraft programs.
