[Alpha Biz= Kim Sangjin] The Cause of Two Explosions and Fires at POSCO's Pohang Steel Plant in November Remains Unclear

The cause of the two explosions and fires that occurred at POSCO's Pohang Steel Plant in November 2024 remains a mystery.

On Thursday, the Pohang Southern Police Department announced that it was unable to determine a specific cause for the explosions and fires that took place at the plant's 3rd Finex unit.

The National Forensic Service recently informed the police that due to severe damage, it was difficult to definitively pinpoint the cause of the incidents.

Based on this, the police concluded that it was not possible to confirm the exact cause of the accidents. As a result, they also stated that it would be difficult to establish clear evidence of arson or accidental fire.

Earlier, on November 10, 2024, an explosion and fire occurred at the 3rd Finex unit of the Pohang Steel Plant, which was extinguished within five hours. One worker suffered burns in the incident.

Then, on November 24, while in the test operation phase, another explosion and fire broke out at the same unit and was put out within two hours.

Following the incidents, the police, along with the National Forensic Service and fire authorities, investigated the possibility of equipment defects, operator negligence, or criminal involvement, focusing on the furnace of the 3rd Finex unit.
