[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] Six paint companies have been caught by the Fair Trade Commission for falsely or exaggeratedly advertising their paint products as having the effect of reducing radon, a Class 1 carcinogen.

The Fair Trade Commission announced on the 19th that it had issued corrective orders (with future prohibition orders) to six paint companies suspected of falsely or exaggeratedly advertising their paint products as having radon blocking or reducing effects. In addition, a fine of 2 million won was imposed on one company that did not voluntarily correct its advertising statements until the review. Radon is a colorless, odorless natural radioactive gas classified as a Class 1 carcinogen by the World Health Organization (WHO).

These companies promoted their radon reduction effects based on their own tests.

However, the Fair Trade Commission determined that the companies' own test evaluations were conducted using arbitrarily submitted samples, and thus lacked objectivity and validity.

According to the test results from the National Institute of Environmental Research, it was found that the products in question either had no radon reduction effect or had lower effects than advertised.
