[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] Daehan Electric Cable has secured its first contract for supplying high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cables in the U.S., marking its entry into the American HVDC market.

On the 19th, Daehan Electric Cable announced that it has been selected as the cable supplier for a project in California involving 32-kilovolt (kV) HVDC and 500-kV high-voltage alternating current (HVAC) transmission. The project, commissioned by LS Power Grid California, is valued at 90 billion KRW (approximately $67 million). This contract represents Daehan Electric Cable's initial foray into the U.S. HVDC market.

HVDC technology is crucial for long-distance, large-scale power transmission. Only a few global companies, including Hitachi (formerly ABB Power Systems), have successfully commercialized HVDC technology for transmitting direct current at voltages above 500 kV. While the HVDC system Daehan Electric Cable has secured is a lower voltage compared to some global products, its successful entry into the U.S. market is seen as a significant achievement.

Daehan Electric Cable also highlights its success with 500-kV HVAC cable systems, the highest voltage for existing AC underground cables, which were developed and commercialized by the company as a national key technology.

The company anticipates increased demand for upgrading aging power grids in the U.S. and has been focusing its efforts on this market since 2017, consistently achieving positive results.
