[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Sangjin] Samsung Electronics is facing challenges in supplying high-bandwidth memory (HBM), a critical semiconductor for the artificial intelligence (AI) era, to its largest customer, NVIDIA. This situation has led to forecasts that SK Hynix will maintain its dominance in the HBM market for the next year.

On the 14th, Bloomberg Intelligence analysts Wakasugi Masahiro and Cecilia Chan released a report titled "Samsung's AI Memory Hurdles Suggest SK Hynix Can Maintain HBM Leadership." They noted that Samsung's preliminary operating profit for the third quarter of this year is projected to be 9.1 trillion won, falling short of market expectations. The delay in entering the HBM market has significantly impacted the poor performance of its Device Solutions (DS) semiconductor division.

Samsung is currently conducting quality verification for its fifth-generation HBM (HBM3E) 8-layer and 12-layer products intended for delivery to NVIDIA. In contrast, SK Hynix has been supplying HBM3E 8-layer products to customers since March and began mass production of the 12-layer products last month.

The report indicates that SK Hynix will continue to lead the market based on its successful delivery performance to NVIDIA, an HBM3E yield rate of around 80%, pre-booked HBM orders for 2025-2026, and expected large-scale capital investments ranging from 16 trillion to 20 trillion won this year.
