[Alpha Biz= Paul Lee] President Yoon Suk-yeol on December 11 urged strict measures in response to the recent personal data breach at Coupang, which affected some 30 million users. Speaking during the Ministry of Strategy and Finance’s annual performance report at the Sejong Convention Center, the President emphasized that companies must face appropriate economic consequences if regulations are violated, noting that penalties must be meaningful to deter wrongdoing.
The reporting session, the first to be fully live-streamed by the government, included presentations from the Ministry of Strategy and Finance, the National Data Agency, the Ministry of Employment and Labor, and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. The President actively questioned agency heads during the reports, drawing on his previous administrative experience as mayor of Seongnam and governor of Gyeonggi Province.
President Yoon also highlighted the need for practical enforcement, asking about the status of manpower increases for drug inspection at customs and scrutinizing the implementation of prior directives. He stressed transparency in governance and encouraged agencies to provide candid feedback during the live session.
In a lighter moment, President Yoon joked with Chief Presidential Secretary Kang Hoon-sik about local real estate, reflecting his informal rapport with senior officials.
The President’s remarks signal a proactive stance on data protection and regulatory enforcement, particularly regarding large-scale breaches that pose risks to citizens’ personal information.
