[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] A class action lawsuit is being prepared in the United States against Coupang Inc., following the data breach that exposed the personal information of more than 30 million users.

On December 7 (local time), SJKP, the U.S. affiliate of the Korean law firm Daeryun, announced that it will hold a press conference in Manhattan, New York, on December 8 to outline its plan to file a punitive damages lawsuit against Coupang in a U.S. court.

Daeryun stated that it intends to pursue legal action simultaneously in both Korea and the United States. The firm has already recruited some plaintiffs for the punitive damages lawsuit to be filed in the U.S. and plans to seek additional participants through the upcoming press conference.

Coupang previously disclosed on November 29 that approximately 33.7 million customer accounts had been compromised, including names, email addresses, phone numbers, physical addresses, and certain order details.

Founded in 2010, Coupang is fully owned by Coupang Inc., its U.S.-listed parent company. Coupang went public on the New York Stock Exchange in 2021. Bom Kim, the founder and Executive Chairman of Coupang Inc., who holds more than 70% of the voting rights of the parent company, was born in Seoul and later acquired U.S. citizenship.
