[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] EcoPro BM has postponed the completion of its cathode materials plant, CAM9, in Pohang by two years, citing a slowdown in electric vehicle (EV) demand. Initially scheduled for completion in December 2024, the CAM9 plant will now be finished in December 2026, according to industry sources on the 23rd.
The company had announced plans in May 2022 to invest KRW 473.2 billion in the CAM9 plant at its Pohang Campus 4, with the goal of producing next-generation cathode materials, including "NCMX" and "single-crystal" products. The facility was expected to have an annual production capacity of 54,000 tons.
NCMX is a proprietary quaternary cathode material developed by EcoPro BM, incorporating nickel, cobalt, manganese, and an undisclosed "X" material. Single-crystal cathodes, which offer higher energy density, greater fire resistance, and longer life, are also a key focus for major cathode material manufacturers.
