[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] POSCO Future M is considering the sale of its Gumi cathode material plant, which is seen as part of its strategy to reorganize its portfolio toward higher-value products.

According to industry sources on Thursday, POSCO Future M is pushing forward with the sale of its Gumi cathode material factory.

The Gumi plant is where POSCO Group laid the foundation for its cathode material business. Its annual production capacity is around 10,000 tons, much smaller compared to the 90,000 tons of the Gwangyang plant and 60,000 tons of the Pohang plant.

The reason for considering the sale of the Gumi plant is attributed to the need for a high-value portfolio reorganization, increasing fixed cost burdens due to the long-term slowdown in electric vehicle demand, and worsening profitability.

The main reason for the sale consideration is portfolio restructuring. The Gumi plant is reportedly producing relatively lower-value products, rather than high-nickel or single crystal cathode materials. POSCO Future M is currently focusing on expanding its portfolio with higher-value products such as high-nickel NCM and NCMA single crystal cathode materials.
