[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Sangjin] In the near future, users will be able to locate their vehicles and control climate settings using only their Galaxy smartphones. The vehicle infotainment system will also allow users to manage home appliances.
On September 25, Samsung Electronics announced a collaboration with Hyundai Motor, Kia, and 42dot to extend the applications of its IoT (Internet of Things) platform, SmartThings, to software-defined vehicles (SDVs).
The two companies signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for technological collaboration and mutual cooperation at Samsung Electronics’ R&D campus in Seoul.
Attendees included Samsung Electronics' Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and Head of Samsung Research, Kyung-hoon Jeon, Vice President Seung-bum Choi from the Device Platform Center, and Vice President Chanwoo Park from the IoT Development Team, as well as President Chang-hyun Song from Hyundai and Kia's AVP Division, Executive Director Hae-young Kwon from the Infotainment Development Center, and Deputy Head Jin-hee Choi from 42dot.
Through this agreement, Samsung plans to integrate SmartThings with the next-generation infotainment systems being developed by Hyundai, Kia, and 42dot to offer a differentiated experience.
The first feature to be introduced will utilize SmartThings Find, a global location tracking solution, to locate both the vehicle and the smart key.
With a Galaxy smartphone, users will be able to find their vehicle's location without needing a 4G or 5G network by leveraging nearby Galaxy smartphones. This feature will be particularly useful for instances such as forgetting where the car was parked or in the event of unexpected theft.
Users will also be able to register their vehicles with SmartThings automation for customized control and quickly check climate control, driving range, and charging status via the quick panel at the top of their Galaxy smartphone.
Additionally, the vehicle's infotainment system will enable users to control their Samsung appliances and IoT devices at home through SmartThings.
Samsung Electronics will continue to collaborate with Hyundai and Kia to provide various SmartThings services based on AI technology tailored to users' lifestyles and preferences.
