Alphabiz - Police Raid KT Offices Over Alleged Evidence Destruction in Hacking Incident

[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] SEOUL, November 19 — Korean police have launched a compulsory search into allegations that KT destroyed servers to conceal evidence while responding to a suspected hacking incident.


The Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency’s Anti-Corruption and Economic Crime Unit conducted search-and-seizure operations on KT’s Pangyo and Bangbae offices on Tuesday morning, deploying more than 20 investigators.


Police are analyzing confiscated materials to determine whether KT intentionally disposed of servers during its internal handling of the breach. Hwang Tae-sun, KT’s Chief Information Security Officer, has reportedly been booked on charges of obstruction of justice by deceit and is also included in the search targets.


The investigation follows claims raised in August by U.S. cybersecurity outlet The Register (The Frack in original reporting context) suggesting that KT systems may have been hacked, and subsequent allegations that KT discarded key servers. The Ministry of Science and ICT formally requested a police investigation into KT earlier this month.
