[Alpha Biz= Paul Lee] SEOUL, November 19 — Samsung Display has effectively won its long-running OLED technology dispute against China’s BOE, after the two companies agreed to settle multiple patent and trade secret lawsuits filed in the United States and China.
Industry officials said Samsung Display and BOE recently reached a settlement covering several ongoing cases, leading to the withdrawal of all related lawsuits. The U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC), which had been scheduled to issue a final ruling on November 17 regarding BOE’s alleged trade secret misappropriation, instead announced on November 18 that it would terminate the proceedings due to the settlement.
Although the terms of the settlement were not disclosed, industry sources believe BOE agreed to pay patent royalties to Samsung Display, marking a significant concession and signaling Samsung’s victory in the dispute.
Samsung Display had filed a series of actions against BOE, including a 2022 ITC complaint over OLED patent infringement and a 2023 trade secret lawsuit. Samsung gained momentum in July when an initial ITC determination recommended a limited exclusion order (LEO) that would have barred BOE’s OLED panels from being imported into the United States for 14 years and 8 months.
The settlement effectively ends the global litigation battle and is viewed as a strategic win for Samsung Display in protecting its OLED intellectual property.
