[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] Workers at Samsung Electronics' factory in southern India have agreed to end their month-long strike and return to work.
According to NDTV and AFP on the 16th (local time), employees at Samsung's Sriperumbudur appliance plant near Chennai, Tamil Nadu, reached an agreement with the company to end the strike and resume work.
The plant, which produces refrigerators and washing machines, accounts for about 20% of Samsung's annual revenue in India, amounting to around $12 billion (approximately 16.4 trillion KRW).
The factory employs about 1,800 workers, with several hundred going on strike since September 9, demanding recognition of their union, better working hours, and wage increases.
The Indian Centre of Trade Unions (CITU) reported that the striking workers were asking for an increase in their monthly wages from an average of 25,000 rupees (about 410,000 KRW) to 36,000 rupees (about 580,000 KRW). However, the specific terms of the agreement between Samsung and the workers were not disclosed.
