[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] On the 12th, Korea Zinc announced that it will invest approximately 2 trillion won to establish a Research and Development (R&D) center in Songdo, Incheon.

Korea Zinc explained that the R&D center aims to support the development of its core businesses, including new renewable energy and hydrogen, secondary battery materials, resource recycling, as well as technological improvements and cost reduction in existing refining operations.

From design approval to completion, Korea Zinc plans to commence construction by the end of 2025 and aims for completion in April 2027. The Songdo R&D center, to be built on approximately 29,000 square meters (about 8,922 pyeong) of land, is expected to require an investment of around 2 trillion won.

Korea Zinc also plans to hire approximately 200 new employees to operate the R&D center, which will consist of five research groups focusing on new renewable energy, green hydrogen, secondary batteries, resource recycling, and future technologies and materials, along with one research support group. Among these hires, about 50% will be individuals with master's or doctoral degrees, emphasizing the recruitment of highly skilled professionals to ensure expertise.
