[Alpha Biz= Reporter Paul Lee] Korea Zinc announced on the 21st that it will invest a total of 753 million Australian dollars (about 670 billion won) in Australia's MacIntyre wind power plant to secure a 30% stake.

Arc Energy, an overseas subsidiary of Korea Zinc, will invest in the MacIntyre wind power plant under construction in Queensland, Australia, through its affiliate Ark Energy MacIntyre. The power plant is a wind power plant under construction by Spain's global renewable energy company Acciona Energy, located southwest of Queensland Warwick, Australia. The MacIntyre wind power plant, which will be equipped with 162 wind turbines, began construction in March 2022, and its current process rate has exceeded 80 percent, and will begin full-fledged commercial operation by August next year.

The MacIntyre wind farm is expected to be the largest wind farm in the world. With this final investment decision, Arc Energy will secure 30% of the power generation capacity of 923.4MW of the MacIntyre wind power plant. 30% of the electricity produced through this will be supplied to SMC, an Australian subsidiary of Korea Zinc. The corresponding amount of electricity is 21.8% (based on the estimated amount of electricity used by Sun Metal in 2024) of the annual amount of electricity used by Sun Metal, which is expected to gain momentum in achieving Sun Metal's 2040 RE100.

In addition to reducing carbon emissions from Korea Zinc's Australian business, the investment is expected to speed up the renewable energy business, one of the pillars of Korea Zinc's future new business "troika Drive" (new renewable energy, resource circulation and secondary battery materials).
