[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] Kumho Tire's labor union has initiated a strike after failing to reach an agreement with management on wage negotiations and performance bonuses.

On the 28th, Kumho Tire announced that tire production at its domestic plants had been halted due to a partial strike by the company’s labor union.

The affected plants include those in Gwangju, Gokseong, and Pyeongtaek. The production stoppage impacts areas accounting for 1.826 trillion KRW in revenue, representing 45.2% of last year’s total sales.

According to the Kumho Tire branch of the Korean Metal Workers' Union under the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU), a four-hour warning strike will be carried out over two days at the three plants, with different shifts participating each day.

The union has warned that if negotiations are not resolved, a full-scale strike will commence on September 3rd, marking the first general strike in six years since the 2018 protest against the company’s foreign sale. After negotiations with management broke down, the union held a strike vote on August 8-9, with 96.4% of union members voting in favor.

Despite the company’s request to resume talks, the 14th round of negotiations on August 22nd ended without an agreement. The union is demanding a 159,800 KRW increase in base salary, the payment of performance bonuses, job security and future vision proposals, and the elimination of discrimination against new union members and regularized employees.
