[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] The labor union at Samsung Biologics has warned of a full-scale strike—the first in the company’s history—amid escalating tensions over performance-based compensation.
According to the union on April 14, it is strongly opposing the company’s method of calculating its Over-Performance Incentive (OPI), citing a lack of transparency as the core issue behind the dispute.
The union argued that despite the company posting record-high operating profit, the bonus payout ratio was lowered compared to the previous year based on undisclosed performance targets. “This is an unacceptable decision that undermines employees’ contributions,” the union said.
Following the breakdown of wage and collective bargaining negotiations, the union has secured legal rights to strike after the National Labor Relations Commission issued a decision to suspend mediation. A recent strike authorization vote also passed with overwhelming support from union members.
A union official stated, “The company has promised to share management performance, but in reality, it is depriving employees of their fair share through arbitrary decisions.” The union warned that unless its demands—including base salary increases and a transparent bonus system—are addressed, it is prepared to proceed with a full-scale strike.
In addition, the union plans to gradually escalate its actions, including rallies in front of the company’s headquarters and phased compliance-based protests if management does not change its stance.
Industry observers caution that, given the nature of Samsung Biologics’ production processes, any strike could lead to significant operational disruptions, including potential large-scale production halts.
