[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] The special prosecutor team led by Ahn Kwon-seop, which is investigating allegations of unpaid severance pay at Coupang, has summoned Eom Sung-hwan, former CEO of Coupang Fulfillment Services, for questioning.
According to the special prosecutor’s office, Eom was called in at 10 a.m. on the 26th and is being questioned for the first time as a suspect on charges of violating the Employee Retirement Benefit Security Act.
Eom is accused of revising company employment rules in May 2023 in a manner unfavorable to employees, resulting in the non-payment of severance pay. Previously, the Bucheon Branch of the Ministry of Employment and Labor referred the case to prosecutors in January last year, concluding that severance pay had been unlawfully withheld following improper changes to employment rules. However, the Bucheon Branch of the Incheon District Prosecutors’ Office decided not to indict Eom in April of the same year.
During that process, Moon Ji-seok, the chief prosecutor in charge of the case, claimed that Eom Hee-jun of the Gwangju High Prosecutors’ Office (then head of the Incheon District Prosecutors’ Office Bucheon Branch) and Kim Dong-hee of the Busan High Prosecutors’ Office (then deputy chief prosecutor at the Bucheon Branch) deliberately excluded key evidence in their report to the Supreme Prosecutors’ Office and pressured for a decision not to indict.
