[Alpha Biz= Reporter Hyeongjin Lee, Youngtaek Kim] Coupang has appointed Harold Rogers as its new CEO following the resignation of Park Dae-joon, amid the ongoing fallout from the massive customer data breach affecting approximately 33.7 million accounts. Rogers, long-time right-hand and trusted lieutenant of Chairman Kim Beom-seok, is known within Coupang for his assertive and hardline approach to legal and regulatory risks.

According to internal sources, Rogers played a central role in managing legal risks and ensuring compliance, often driving decisive actions to address potential liabilities. His appointment is widely interpreted as a signal that Coupang intends to confront regulatory and legal challenges directly.

The company faces heightened scrutiny from both the government and law enforcement. President Lee Jae-myung recently criticized Coupang for failing to detect the breach over five months and has instructed authorities to consider granting stronger enforcement powers. Meanwhile, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency’s Cyber Investigation Unit has conducted consecutive high-intensity raids at Coupang’s headquarters, focusing on a former Chinese national employee responsible for the company’s authentication system.

Coupang initially reported 4,500 compromised accounts on November 20, but authorities later confirmed that approximately 33.7 million customer accounts were affected, underscoring the severity of the incident and the regulatory pressure the company now faces.
