[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] The pilots' union of Asiana Airlines voiced opposition on Tuesday to the sale of Asiana’s cargo division to Air Incheon, stating that they would oppose the deal unless employment and welfare conditions were guaranteed.

According to industry sources, some union members are collecting signatures from employees opposing the sale and are preparing a lawsuit asserting that any transfer without individual consent is unacceptable.

Earlier in the day, Asiana Airlines approved the sale of its cargo business to Air Incheon during an extraordinary general meeting held at its headquarters in Osoe-dong, Gangseo-gu, Seoul.

The sale is part of the conditions set by the European Commission (EC) and Japan Fair Trade Commission for approving Korean Air’s acquisition of Asiana Airlines. With the shareholder approval, the formal process for the spin-off and merger of Asiana’s cargo unit is now complete.

Last month, on January 16, Asiana Airlines and Air Incheon signed a final agreement to sell the cargo unit for KRW 470 billion. The deal is expected to be finalized in June when Air Incheon completes a capital increase and transfers the payment to Asiana Airlines.

Asiana Airlines plans to complete the transfer of the cargo business unit, including both assets and personnel, to Air Incheon by June 10. The transfer includes 11 cargo aircraft—10 Boeing 747 freighters and one Boeing 767 freighter—as well as approximately 800 employees.
