[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] Seoul – Korean Air announced on September 8 that it is preparing to dispatch a charter flight as early as September 9 to repatriate approximately 300 South Korean nationals detained by U.S. immigration authorities at a joint battery plant construction site in Georgia.
The airline stated: “We are coordinating closely with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and LG Energy Solution to enable the earliest possible departure of the charter flight.”
According to the presidential office, negotiations between Seoul and Washington regarding the detainees’ release have been concluded. The South Korean workers are expected to return home on September 10, under a voluntary departure arrangement facilitated by the Korean government.
On September 4 (local time), U.S. immigration authorities raided the Hyundai Motor Group–LG Energy Solution joint battery plant under construction in Bryan County, Georgia. During the operation, 475 workers were detained on charges of alleged illegal stay, including about 300 South Korean nationals.
