[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Sangjin] POSCO Holdings announced on the 5th that its joint venture with China’s Zhongtai Cryogenic Technology, named POSCO Zhongtai Air Solutions, has commenced construction of a high-purity rare gas plant on the Donghoan site in Gwangyang, South Jeolla Province.

POSCO Zhongtai Air Solutions was established in August with POSCO Holdings holding a 75.1% stake and Zhongtai Cryogenic Technology holding 24.9%.

The high-purity rare gas plant aims for completion by November next year and will be located on the southern side of the Donghoan area near the Gwangyang Steelworks. The plant is expected to have an annual production capacity of 130,000 normal cubic meters (N㎥), sufficient to meet 52% of the domestic semiconductor market's demand. By producing high-purity rare gases domestically, the facility is anticipated to provide a stable supply of essential materials for advanced industries such as semiconductors and space exploration, reducing reliance on imports. Rare gases include neon (18 PPM), xenon (0.09 PPM), and krypton (1.1 PPM), which are present in extremely small quantities in the air and are primarily used in advanced industries like semiconductors, displays, and satellite propulsion fuels.
