[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] The three researchers who died while conducting vehicle performance tests at Hyundai Motor's Ulsan plant are suspected to have succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning.

On November 20, the Ulsan Police Agency conducted a joint on-site investigation at the electrification quality division's vehicle performance testing chamber from 10:30 AM to 5:00 PM. The investigation included 45 participants from the police, the National Forensic Service, the Ministry of Employment and Labor, the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency, and Hyundai Motor representatives. The team replicated the conditions of the chamber, including temperature and humidity, to inspect the ventilation systems and other facilities comprehensively.

The National Forensic Service is focusing on carbon monoxide poisoning as the likely cause of death and is analyzing autopsy results. A police representative stated, "We are investigating various possibilities, and the precise cause of death will be determined in two weeks. We will also review CCTV footage to investigate whether protective gear was used."

Lee Dong-seok, Hyundai Motor's Chief Safety Officer (CSO), issued a statement pledging full cooperation with the authorities during the investigation and a commitment to improving potential risk factors thoroughly.

Moon Yong-moon, head of the Hyundai Motor branch of the Korean Metal Workers' Union, released an urgent statement emphasizing the need for a comprehensive review of workplace safety measures and procedures. He stated, "This incident signals a critical need to reassess safety protocols," and pledged to thoroughly investigate the accident's cause through a meeting of the Occupational Health and Safety Committee.
