[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] KT announced that, in addition to ₩1.7 billion in unauthorized small-payment damages suffered by some customers, the International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI) data of 5,561 subscribers was potentially exposed.
At a press conference held on September 11 at KT’s Gwanghwamun headquarters, CEO Kim Young-sub formally apologized and pledged to fully compensate all affected customers. KT will provide free USIM card replacements for all 19,000 customers who may have been exposed to unauthorized signals, and is also reviewing measures to waive penalties for those wishing to switch carriers.
KT confirmed that traces of two illegal micro base stations were found within its network, which likely led to the exposure of customer IMSI data. The company has reported the incident to the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA) and is working closely with authorities to identify the root cause and prevent further damage.
CEO Kim emphasized:
“I sincerely apologize to our customers and the public. KT is mobilizing all resources to ensure additional security measures and will fully compensate those impacted.”
