[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] Kakao Mobility, already grappling with legal challenges, is now facing an embezzlement scandal. According to a report by Kukmin Ilbo on the 17th, an internal notice about personnel actions was posted on Kakao Mobility’s intranet last month, revealing that two employees from a specific business unit responsible for external contracts had been disciplined.
These employees, who had worked in the department for several years, inflated payments during contract negotiations with an external vendor. They falsified documents to make the contracts appear legitimate and attempted to pocket a portion of the inflated amounts. The financial damage to Kakao Mobility is estimated to be in the tens of millions of KRW. The contract with the vendor in question has since expired.
The scheme was uncovered during a routine internal audit conducted by Kakao Mobility as part of its internal control system. The company has reportedly identified the total extent of the financial losses and has fully recovered the funds. The employee responsible for leading the embezzlement has been terminated, while another involved staff member has been suspended. A Kakao Mobility representative stated, "The individuals involved have been dealt with according to company policy, and we are currently reviewing possible legal actions."
