[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] POSCO Future M is considering the sale of its relatively outdated cathode materials plant in Gumi, North Gyeongsang Province.

According to industry sources on Thursday, POSCO Future M is currently in the process of reviewing the sale of its Gumi cathode materials plant.

POSCO Future M has been producing cathode materials, a key component of secondary batteries, at three locations in South Korea: Gwangyang, Pohang, and Gumi.

Among these, the Gumi plant is where POSCO Future M first began cathode material production, with an annual capacity of about 10,000 tons.

However, following the establishment of the Gwangyang plant with an annual capacity of 90,000 tons and the Pohang plant with an annual capacity of 60,000 tons, the main production bases for POSCO Future M’s cathode materials are now Gwangyang and Pohang.

The Gumi plant, which started production in the early 2010s, does not produce POSCO Future M's latest high-value-added products, such as 'high nickel' nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) cathodes and nickel-cobalt-manganese-aluminum (NCMA) single crystal cathodes.

Additionally, POSCO Future M announced that it would delay the acquisition of a 1 billion won stake in C&P Shinso Materials Technology from the originally planned date of January 31 this year to January 31 next year.
