[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] KT recently saw around 2,800 employees—approximately one in six of its workforce—apply for voluntary retirement amidst the company’s reorganization efforts to expand its artificial intelligence (AI) business. This transition, which involves employees from roles like network management and business services leaving the company, has raised concerns about potential operational gaps.

On November 8, KT carried out the voluntary retirement program, and as part of its contingency plan, it posted job listings for short-term contract workers to handle tasks in line design and business services operations. These contract positions are intended to fill in temporarily until KT's new network management subsidiary, KT Netcore, is officially launched next year. Contracted employees will be responsible for tasks such as optical and copper cable infrastructure design and data management for telecommunication pathways.

As of now, 1,700 KT employees have applied for transfers to KT Netcore and another subsidiary, KT P&M, both set to launch in January 2024. The company initially aimed to transfer 3,400 employees to KT Netcore and 380 to KT P&M. However, the current figures have yet to meet the intended transfer targets.
