[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] LG Energy Solution has been tapped to supply cylindrical batteries to SpaceX, the private space exploration company founded by Elon Musk. According to industry sources on the 10th, LG Energy Solution has begun product development for batteries that will power SpaceX’s spacecraft.
It is reported that LG Energy Solution has previously supplied SpaceX with 2170 cylindrical batteries (21mm in diameter, 70mm in length) for some years. These improved lithium-ion batteries are expected to be incorporated into SpaceX's next-generation launch vehicle, "Starship," slated for launch next year.
Starship, the flagship spacecraft of SpaceX, is being developed with lunar and Martian exploration in mind. Last month, SpaceX successfully completed the fifth orbital test flight of Starship. Musk envisions Starship as a vehicle to enable human settlement on Mars. The spacecraft will also play a role in NASA’s Artemis Phase 3 mission, part of the initiative to return humans to the Moon for the first time in over 50 years.
