[Alpha Biz= Paul Lee] According to Seoul Economic Daily, SK Hynix announced plans to invest KRW 19 trillion to build its seventh semiconductor advanced packaging (P&T7) facility in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province, in a strategic move to boost supply chain efficiency and future competitiveness while aligning with the government’s regional balanced growth policy.
“P&T7 will be constructed on a 70,000-pyeong site in Cheongju Technopolis Industrial Complex. Construction is set to begin in April this year and is scheduled for completion by the end of next year. This investment is aimed at responding stably to global AI memory demand and optimizing production at the Cheongju Fab.”
The P&T7 facility will finalize semiconductor chips produced at front-end fabs into finished products and conduct final quality verification. Once completed, SK Hynix will operate three advanced packaging hubs: Icheon in Gyeonggi Province, Cheongju, and West Lafayette in Indiana, U.S., strengthening both domestic and overseas production networks.
“We previously demolished buildings on the former LG Cheongju 2nd Plant site to prepare for P&T7. The decision on the construction start date and investment scale has been finalized in line with the semiconductor supercycle market conditions.”
