[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] A confrontation between management and labor erupted at the Ulsan shipyard of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries over the installation of tents. During the incident, a security guard employed by the company was arrested after knocking down a police officer attempting to intervene.
According to HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, the union, and police, the union began a strike at 9:30 AM on the day of the incident, facing challenges in wage and collective bargaining negotiations this year.
At around 10:30 AM, the union attempted to set up a tent on a logistics road within the factory, leading to a standoff with company security for over an hour, resulting in clashes. This road is known to accommodate hundreds of vehicles daily for the delivery of materials from external partners.
The company claimed it acted to prevent the union's illegal occupation, which it argued could halt factory operations due to logistical disruptions. Management asserted that its security personnel were first assaulted by union members, leading to the physical altercation.
Conversely, the union alleged that management unilaterally attacked union members when they attempted to set up the shade structure.
During the clashes, some union members sustained injuries, including a fractured nasal bone, and were transported to a nearby hospital.
Additionally, a security guard, identified as a 30-something male, was arrested for obstructing police duties after pushing a police officer while trying to dismantle the tent. The police are investigating him for interfering with official duties. He reportedly stated during his arrest that he "did not realize [they] were police officers."
A union representative criticized the company’s security personnel for allegedly using kicks and punches against workers who posed no threat and called for a thorough investigation and punishment for the violent actions.
