[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] Absolics, the semiconductor glass substrate venture of SKC, has been awarded $75 million (approximately 100 billion KRW) in production subsidies under the U.S. CHIPS Act, becoming the first semiconductor materials, components, and equipment manufacturer to receive such funding.

According to the U.S. Department of Commerce on December 5, Absolics finalized a subsidy agreement under the CHIPS Act. This follows its completion of a $300 million glass substrate factory in Covington, Georgia, with the subsidy covering approximately 22% of the total investment.

In addition to this subsidy, Absolics was also selected last month as a recipient of a $100 million grant under the U.S. National Advanced Packaging Manufacturing Program (NAPMP). The company has partnered with over 30 organizations, including global tech giants, academic institutions, and non-profits, to advance research and development in the glass substrate sector, marking the first R&D grant awarded in this field.

SKC established Absolics in 2021 to spearhead its glass substrate business. Although not yet commercially available, glass substrates are considered a "dream material" in the semiconductor industry due to their high potential profitability and transformative applications in next-generation semiconductors.
