[Alpha Biz=(Chicago) Reporter Kim Jisun] Sales of Samsung Electronics' semiconductor business fell to third place in the world last year. Samsung Electronics beat Intel of the U.S. to become the No. 1 semiconductor company in 2022, but Intel regained the lead last year taking advantage of the worsening memory industry.

According to market research firm Omdia on the 29th, annual sales of Samsung Electronics' semiconductor (DS) division amounted to $ 44.374 billion (60 trillion won) last year. It decreased by 33.8% from $ 67.05 billion (90.7 trillion won) last year. It decreased more than the industry's top 20 companies average (-8.3%) last year. As a result, Samsung Electronics' sales ranking fell to third place.

The companies that beat Samsung Electronics are Intel and Nvidia of the United States. Intel recorded $51.197 billion (69 trillion won) in sales, down 15.8% from the previous year, but regained the top spot after overcoming Samsung Electronics' slump. Intel has maintained its dominant market share in the central processing unit (CPU) and other product markets, but it gave up its position to Samsung Electronics in 2018. Samsung Electronics ranked No. 1 in the industry in 2022, but lost its lead due to the unprecedented downturn in the industry.

NVIDIA, which came in second after Intel, quickly rose from eighth place last year to second place last year as its sales jumped 133.6% to $49.161 billion last year due to the growth of the generative AI (artificial intelligence) industry.
