[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] The Korea Fair Trade Commission (KFTC) has launched an on-site investigation into subcontracting practices within the secondary battery industry, as the electric vehicle market experiences a slowdown.

According to industry sources on January 22, the KFTC’s Technology Misappropriation Investigation Division has been conducting a field investigation at Samsung SDI’s Giheung plant since January 19.

Industry observers say the probe is focusing on potential violations related to technology use, including unfair practices during technology data requests, the presence and enforcement of non-disclosure agreements (NDAs), improper use of technical data, and any retaliatory actions following complaints.

The KFTC is reportedly planning to carry out similar investigations at other major battery makers, including LG Energy Solution and SK On.

A KFTC official declined to comment on specifics but did not deny that the field investigation is underway.
