[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] LG Energy Solution has secured its first large-scale contract to supply 46mm cylindrical batteries (46mm in diameter and 80-95mm in height) to Mercedes-Benz, starting in 2028. These new batteries offer significantly improved energy efficiency and fire safety compared to the existing 2170 cylindrical batteries (21mm in diameter and 70mm in height).
On October 8, LG Energy Solution announced that it will supply 50.5 GWh of 46mm cylindrical batteries to Mercedes-Benz from January 2028 to December 2038, enough to power approximately 630,000 electric vehicles.
While specific contract details were not disclosed due to a confidentiality agreement with the client, market analysts estimate the contract value to be in the billions of dollars. LG Energy Solution is currently constructing a dedicated plant for 46mm batteries in Arizona, USA, which is expected to begin production in 2027. The batteries for Mercedes-Benz will be produced at this facility once it becomes operational.
