[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] Hyundai Steel's labor union has announced a strike at the Dangjin plant as wage and collective bargaining negotiations (CBA) remain unresolved, extending into the new year. Disagreements over performance bonuses and other issues have stalled progress toward an agreement.

The cold-rolling mill at the Dangjin plant will halt operations for 24 hours starting at 7 a.m. on January 21. All union members, except for essential workers, will withdraw from the site. Essential personnel will only perform equipment protection and critical maintenance tasks.

On January 22, starting at 7 a.m., senior union leaders from the Metalworkers' Union's Chungnam branch at Hyundai Steel will stage a 24-hour strike.

The Dangjin plant, a key production hub, accounts for more than two-thirds of Hyundai Steel's crude steel output.

During the 18th round of negotiations on Thursday, the union warned that if management failed to present a satisfactory proposal, they would proceed with the strike. This partial strike will lead into a planned large-scale general strike on February 11 at Hyundai Motor Group's headquarters.

Management has expressed difficulty in accepting the union's demands, citing deteriorating financial performance due to oversupply of low-cost steel products from China.
