[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Jisun] Samsung, LG, and Hyundai Motor Group have invested in Tenstorrent, a Canadian AI semiconductor startup that is considered a potential rival to Nvidia in the AI semiconductor market, Bloomberg reported on December 2 (local time).
Jim Keller, CEO of Tenstorrent, revealed in an interview with Bloomberg that the investment was part of a $700 million (approximately 9.8 trillion KRW) funding round led by Korean firm AFW Partners and Samsung Securities.
Samsung and LG Electronics, among others, participated in the round, and Hyundai Motor Group is also known to have invested. CEO Keller is a semiconductor industry legend, having designed AMD’s Ryzen processors and Apple’s A-series mobile chips.
In October of last year, Samsung Electronics was selected as the foundry for Tenstorrent’s next-generation AI chips, and LG Electronics has been collaborating with Tenstorrent to develop semiconductors for TV applications.
