[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] Samsung Electronics announced on Tuesday that it will acquire the advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) business of Germany’s ZF Friedrichshafen through its subsidiary Harman for €1.5 billion (approximately KRW 2.6 trillion). This marks Samsung’s second trillion-won-scale acquisition this year and its first major automotive electronics M&A in eight years since acquiring Harman in 2017.
The ADAS unit is a global market leader in smart camera systems and supplies major automakers worldwide. Through the acquisition, Harman will enter the high-growth ADAS market, integrating front cameras and ADAS controllers with its digital cockpit solutions to strengthen its position in the software-defined vehicle (SDV) ecosystem.
Samsung expects the ADAS and centralized controller market to grow at a compound annual rate of around 12% through 2035. The deal follows Samsung’s recent large-scale acquisitions in HVAC, audio, and digital health, underscoring its strategy to secure future growth engines and expand its global automotive and mobility business.
