[Alpha Biz= Reporter Kim Sangjin] Amazon in the United States has started selling Hyundai cars, making it the first time Hyundai vehicles are available for purchase on the platform. While Tesla, known for online sales, sells its cars through its own website, Hyundai has been selling cars online in Korea, including the compact car Casper, and has been offering some models for online sale in countries like the UK and India.
On December 10 (local time), Amazon announced on its website that customers in 48 U.S. cities—including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, and Washington D.C.—can now purchase new Hyundai vehicles through Amazon. This follows a strategic partnership announcement at the 2023 LA Auto Show, one year ago, which paved the way for Amazon to enter online car sales.
Currently, in the trial phase of the "Amazon Auto" section, customers can buy ten Hyundai models available in the U.S., including the Palisade, Kona, Elantra (Avante), Venue, Sonata, Ioniq 6, Ioniq 5, Tucson, Santa Fe, and the pickup truck Santa Cruz.
By entering their address or ZIP code, customers can check if they are eligible to purchase a vehicle. If eligible, they can view the price and payment terms set by a local Hyundai dealer on Amazon Auto. The process is similar to how open-market sellers list items on Amazon. Customers can either pick up the car from the dealership at a convenient time or request home delivery.
