[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] LG Electronics has initiated a voluntary recall for 500,000 electric ranges in the U.S., targeting customers who purchased affected models.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on Monday, LG Electronics voluntarily recalled 500,000 units across 22 models, including LDE4411ST, on February 6 (local time).

The recalled products are electric ovens with front-mounted handles, which pose a fire hazard as they may unintentionally turn on upon contact by people or pets.

The CPSC reported over 86 cases of unintended activation due to the front-mounted handle. Among these incidents, five resulted in fires, causing approximately $340,000 in property damage. Additionally, at least eight injuries from burns and three pet fatalities were reported.

LG Electronics stated that products sold since last year include labels addressing this issue, whereas those manufactured prior did not. However, the user manual provides guidance on using the safety feature.

As a precaution, the CPSC recommended that LG Electronics distribute safety labels to customers who own units without the labeling.

In response, LG Electronics’ U.S. subsidiary announced that it would provide free safety labels to affected customers. The company has also created instructional videos on using the safety feature, which are now available on its website.
