[Alpha Biz= Paul Lee] Two workers were killed and five others injured on August 19 after being struck by a Mugunghwa passenger train during flood-damage inspections along the Gyeongbu Line in Cheongdo, North Gyeongsang Province.
The Ministry of Employment and Labor immediately launched an investigation under the Serious Accidents Punishment Act, forming central and regional response headquarters. A 15-member task force will review potential safety violations, including breaches of the Occupational Safety and Health Act.
Labor Minister Kim Young-hoon called the incident “a tragic accident that should never have happened” and vowed strict accountability. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport also dispatched safety inspectors and railway police to support recovery efforts and conduct a structural cause analysis.
