[Alpha Biz= Paul Lee] The South Korean government announced on June 4 that no significant issues have been found in the initial on-site inspections of KT Corp. and LG Uplus Corp., following the recent data breach incident involving SK Telecom.

According to the Ministry of Science and ICT and industry sources, first-phase security checks were conducted at LG Uplus on May 30 and at KT on June 2. Thus far, no evidence suggesting a hacking attempt or security breach has been identified.

However, the Ministry emphasized that the inspections are not yet complete, stating, “While no anomalies have been discovered so far, we cannot conclusively declare that the systems are free of issues.”

The government plans to conduct secondary on-site inspections of both telecom operators. In the wake of the SK Telecom breach, authorities have expanded cybersecurity inspections across the industry.

Since May 23, the Ministry has deployed cybersecurity experts from the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA) to examine the security status of major telecom and platform companies. The investigation process mirrors that used in the SK Telecom case. The firms under inspection include KT, LG Uplus, Naver, Woowa Brothers, Kakao, and Coupang.

Upon completion of the telecom sector inspections, the government will initiate on-site reviews of the four major platform companies.
