[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] South Korea’s Broadcast and Communications Commission (BCC) has launched a fact-finding investigation into allegations that KT Corp. concealed a hacking incident and engaged in deceptive sales practices toward customers.
According to industry sources on January 27, the BCC is examining whether KT violated the Telecommunications Business Act.
A joint public-private investigation team under the Ministry of Science and ICT found that KT disposed of 41 servers infected with malware between March and July 2024. However, it was later revealed that KT allegedly concealed this security breach while continuing to attract customers during last year’s hacking incident involving SK Telecom.
The BCC is therefore reviewing whether KT engaged in customer deception, an act prohibited under the Telecommunications Business Act.
Earlier, political circles and civic groups called for a strict investigation and appropriate sanctions, arguing that KT’s actions constituted consumer deception. On January 12, the Seoul YMCA’s Citizens’ Monitoring Center stated that KT had “falsely disclosed critical information directly related to the security level and status of its ability to provide safe telecommunications services.”
