[Alpha Biz= Reporter Cha Hye Young] A small group of unionized workers at Coupang’s logistics centers began a strike on August 1, but the company confirmed that its Rocket Delivery service is operating without disruption.

The Coupang Logistics Center Branch of the Korean Public Service and Transport Workers’ Union had previously announced the strike, citing inadequate cooling and rest facilities during the summer months. The union stated that around 1,600 workers signed a strike pledge, planning to participate through annual leave, sick days, and refusal of overtime. However, industry observers noted that actual participation appeared minimal.

According to retail industry sources, attendance rates among Coupang’s full-time and temporary staff were nearly 100%, and with more than 50,000 direct employees, the small-scale strike is expected to have little impact on operations. Coupang has also secured sufficient backup staff, including part-time workers, to ensure uninterrupted service.

The union had staged a similar strike last August, which also failed to affect Rocket Delivery operations.

Coupang reassured customers:

“Rocket Delivery continues to run as normal, even on weekends and public holidays. The strike at certain logistics centers will not impact our service.”

In preparation for extreme heat, Coupang Fulfillment Services (CFS) invested hundreds of billions of KRW last year to install system air conditioners at major logistics hubs and set up “Cool Zones” — air-conditioned rest areas for staff working outdoors.

The company emphasized that it will continue investing in improving working conditions and logistics infrastructure across its network.
