[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] Hanwha Ocean and the Daewoo Shipbuilding Branch of the Korean Metal Workers' Union (KMWU) in Gyeongnam announced on June 18 that they have agreed to mutually withdraw all ongoing lawsuits and criminal complaints filed against each other.

Hanwha Ocean stated that both parties reached a consensus that establishing a cooperative labor-management relationship is essential for the company’s sustainable growth and for enhancing employees' rights.

Through the agreement, Hanwha Ocean and the labor union committed to resolving labor-management issues through dialogue and compromise, and pledged to foster a workplace where both managerial authority and labor rights are mutually respected.

A Hanwha Ocean representative commented, “This is a model agreement for building a sustainable and collaborative labor-management relationship,” and added, “We aim to continue fostering productive discussions and a cooperative partnership, including the smooth resolution of ongoing wage and collective bargaining negotiations.”

Previously, Hanwha Ocean, during its time as Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME), filed a 47 billion KRW (approx. USD 34 million) damage claim against leaders of the subcontractor union in relation to a 51-day sit-in strike at the Geoje shipyard dock in June 2022.

The union insisted the strike was a legitimate labor action and called for the withdrawal of the lawsuit, while the company had maintained that failing to pursue legal action over the business losses could be considered a breach of fiduciary duty by management.
