[Alpha Biz= Paul Lee] August 7, 2025 – Seoul, South Korea — Hanwha Group, the new owner of food service company Ourhome, has submitted a petition of non-punishment in the embezzlement case involving former Ourhome CEO Koo Bon-sung, signaling it does not wish for further legal punishment in the ongoing appeal trial.
Koo Bon-sung, who served as CEO from 2017 to 2021, was indicted without detention on charges of embezzlement and breach of trust. Prosecutors allege that he used company funds for personal use by converting corporate gift certificates into cash. He is also accused of ordering unauthorized salary increases without shareholder approval, resulting in excessive personal compensation.
In September 2023, the Seoul Southern District Court sentenced Koo to two years in prison, suspended for three years. Both Koo and the prosecution appealed the ruling, with a verdict in the appellate trial scheduled for August 22.
Following the petition, Koo Ji-eun, Koo Bon-sung’s sister and former Vice President of Ourhome, strongly criticized Hanwha’s decision, calling the former CEO’s actions a “clear case of corporate misconduct.”
Hanwha Group acquired Ourhome earlier this year from the Koo family as part of its broader expansion into the food and lifestyle sector.
