[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] The Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) announced on May 27 that it has received a group dispute mediation request involving 100 individuals in connection with the recent data breach incident at SK Telecom (KRX: 017670). The commission stated that the mediation procedure will be completed within 60 days, as stipulated under the Personal Information Protection Act.

The group dispute mediation system aims to provide a prompt, non-litigious resolution to conflicts involving personal data. The Personal Information Dispute Mediation Committee, a quasi-judicial body, handles the process. Once an application is accepted, the committee announces the initiation of proceedings on its official website. From the day following the end of this public notice period, the committee is required to conclude the mediation within 60 days.

If all parties agree to the proposed mediation plan, it becomes binding for all applicants who participated. However, if even one party rejects the proposal, the mediation will be considered unsuccessful.

The PIPC added, “We requested supplementary documents from the applicants yesterday, and we aim to officially commence the process following a full committee resolution as early as mid-June. During the public notice period, other affected individuals may also apply to join the group mediation.”
