[Alpha Biz= Kim Jisun] Samsung Electronics has formed its first-ever single majority labor union since the company’s establishment.
According to the Samsung Electronics chapter of the National Samsung Electronics Union on January 29, union membership had reached approximately 63,000 as of 1 p.m. that day, surpassing the threshold of 62,500 members required to be recognized as a majority union under the union’s criteria.
The union plans to send an official notice to management on the morning of January 30 to initiate formal procedures for recognition as the majority union. It is also expected to notify the Ministry of Employment and Labor to begin the process of securing legal status as the employees’ representative.
However, the exact determination of majority union status may vary depending on verification procedures to be conducted going forward.
If the National Samsung Electronics Union is officially recognized as the majority union, it will legally obtain the status of bargaining representative, granting it exclusive authority to conduct collective bargaining and negotiate working conditions on behalf of employees.
